The Customers (Fans) Must Win or There Is No Business (NHL)
The NHL and Players Union are doing a few things right now that the contract issues are over. First they recognize the excitement for the game and fan loyalty must be restored. Customers having a positive buying experience is key for any business.
The NHL and Players Union are repostioning the product. They have an image they feel is positive and conveys the message this is a new day. The image is being developed under the theme "It's A Whole New Game." Moving forward considering ill will created during a 16 month lock out is a good idea.
Now there is substance behind the theme. First, rule changes have been made to bring the fan back into the fun of the game. For example, the size of the goalies pads are further restricted which should make it easier to score goals. There is nothing like a goal to bring the fans alive. Key point here, what is the number one key success factor that makes a happy customer (fan). Well in hockey it is goals.
Leaders are not counting on just rule changes to bring fans back. There are marketing campaigns rolling out, incentive pricing on tickets, free tickets, more visibility and accessibility to the celebrities. All classic moves when trying to build awareness and loyalty.
The NHL and Players union are to be complimented on working now with each other to promote the game. The fans will vote with their wallets on how well they like the new NHL.
